Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Systems Mechanic
A refrigeration and air conditioning systems mechanic performs some of the following tasks:
- Plans, prepares, and lays out an air conditioning system
- Installs and starts up the system and verifies the operation and function of the system
- Installs and connects piping for the purpose of conveying all types of refrigerant used for both primary and secondary cooling
- Maintains, services, tests, adjusts, and repairs and replaces system components and accessories, including the electrical components of the system
In this program, students will complete the “Level One” in Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Systems Mechanic at George Brown College (Casa Loma Campus).
LEVEL ONE

Program Credits / Certification:
- Earn 2-3 Cooperative education credits on Principal’s discretion
- Earn 2 dual credits upon successful completion of “Level One”
- Earn a “Level One” apprenticeship training designation in Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Systems Mechanic
Upon successful completion of the 8 week in-school “Level One” session at George Brown College, Casa Loma Campus, students work to complete their Cooperative Education Placement. Students will be placed with an HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) company for the duration of their co-op placement.
To Qualify:
- Be in good academic standing with a minimum of 26 credits including completion of all compulsory courses
- Have experience and a keen interest in working as a Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Systems Mechanic
- Be willing to travel and arrive punctually at George Brown College (Casa Loma Campus) for the eight week “Level One” in-class training
- Have minimum 65% Grade 11 University or College Mathematics
Candidates will be interviewed in late November or early December.

Program Components Include:
- 8 weeks at George Brown College
- 8 weeks at a Cooperative Education Placement with a leading refrigeration and air conditioning company within the GTA
This program combines apprenticeship training at George Brown College along with a Cooperative Education placement with a certified Refrigeration and Air Conditioning technician. It is offered in Semester 2 and is open to students in their graduating year with a minimum of 26 credits.
